About Zoo Corps

Zoo Corps volunteers are adults, 18 and older, who care about their local zoo and want to help out in their community. As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to promote the Zoo with your passion, help with special events, engage in lifelong learning, and much more.

The Zoo Corps program consists of multiple volunteer opportunities based on the needs of Sunset Zoo.  The currently list of volunteer opportunities include:

Conservation Engagement VolunteerEngage Sunset Zoo guests directly through conversation and other hands-on interactions to promote the Zoo's conservation mission.
Zoo Operations VolunteerAssist the administrative team with office tasks that help keep the Zoo moving forward.
AM ZOO Crew VolunteerProvide for the well-being of the ambassador animals in our care in the Education Department.
Keeper AssistantProvide Sunset Zoo's zookeeper staff with regular support in their day-to-day tasks.
Landscape VolunteerSupport the beautification and local conservation efforts of Sunset Zoo by tending to the many onsite gardens. 

Each opportunity consists of a unique series of on-the-job trainings to orient you to the associated volunteer responsibilities. More details are coming for each opportunity.

Zoo Corps Orientation & Training

Orientation for new Zoo Corps members consists of both online and in-person sessions.  The online session are a series of recorded videos about key aspects of Sunset Zoo's operation, and is managed through Google Classroom.  This will take a new Zoo Corps member approximately five (5) hours to complete, and is self-paced.  This training must be completed prior to the scheduled, in-person training.  The in-person training will last approximately 4 hours.  The details for the upcoming in-person training is listed below.

In-Person Zoo Corps Orientation Session
Date: September 24, 2023
Time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Pre-Requisite: Online training modules must be completed by 10:00 a.m. on September 24, 2023 to attend.

Each volunteer opportunity has its own, unique set of training, some of which is on-the-job. These trainings are offered on a specific schedule. Those interested in these trainings must have completed the full orientation program with both online and in-person sessions. Those completing the orientation program will receive details of each volunteer opportunity specific training and can choose which they want to complete. Zoo Corps members are not required to participate in all volunteer opportunities.

Zoo Corps Registration

There is a $10 registration fee. Registration is accomplished by completing the online volunteer registration form and successfully paying the registration fee. Once you complete this registration form, you will receive an email with a link to our online payment system. Proceed to the payment system and pay your registration fee to complete the registration process. The receipt for your payment will include the link to the Google Classroom.
