Scientific Name: Terrapene ornata ornata

This species is one of only two species of turtles that are native to the Great Plains of the United States.

  • Size: Length: 4 to 6 inches
  • Diet: Grasses, berries, insects and carrion
  • Habitat: Prairie or grassland areas
  • Range in the Wild: North America, from Wisconsin to the Gulf of Mexico and from Louisiana to Colorado
