Scientific Name: Ailurus fulgens

Red Pandas possess a modified wrist bone that acts as a sixth digit or thumb.

  • Size: Weight: 12 to 20 pounds; Head to body length: 20 to 26 inches; Tail length: 12 to 20 inches
  • Diet: One of the few animals whose diet is composed almost entirely on bamboo. Occasionally eat roots, fruit and small eggs
  • Habitat: Typically live in temperate forests that have bamboo-thicket under stories
  • Range in the Wild: The exact range is unknown but found throughout the Himalayan Mountains

Conservation Status

Listed as Vulnerable. The wild population is estimated at less than 10,000 with a continuing decline of greater than 10% over the next three generations. Major threat is habitat loss due to deforestation.
